- The Throne

The Throne is gecomponeerd door Hans Cok en gaat over het visioen van Johannes, waarin hij in de hemel getuige is van de aanbidding van het Lam door de engelen en verlosten rondom de troon van God. Verderop in dit artikel kunt u geluidsfragmenten beluisteren van een live opname die werd gemaakt tijdens de premiere op 1 december 2006 in de Nieuwe Kerk te Maasland. Het eerste deel heeft als thema: De aanbidding van het Lam. Door Jezus’ dood als offer voor de zonden van de mensheid is het mogelijk geworden dat God vergeving schenkt aan zondige mensen en Hij hen omarmt in de hemel. Het eerste muzikale thema (Holy, holy!) roemt Gods heiligheid - in de orkestpartij wordt een ontzagwekkend schouwspel geschilderd. In het tweede thema wordt verklaard waarom God aanbeden moet worden: Hij is de Schepper van alle dingen. Dan volgt een ontroerend gedeelte uit de bijbel: de vertwijfeling van Johannes, omdat er geen ’bevoegde’ is om de boekrol te openen en daardoor het plan van God met de mensheid doorgang te laten vinden: Wie is waardig? Het antwoord daarop: You are worthy, Jezus is waardig om het boek te openen. Hij is als een offerlam geslacht om ons voor God te ’kopen’. Dat leidt tot de gezamenlijke aanbidding van het Lam door engelen en verlosten. Het tweede deel opent met een orkestrale inleiding die het klinken van de bazuinen en de dreiging van het oordeel uit Openbaring 8 weergeeft. Daarop volgen de aankondiging van het oordeel en de aanbidding uit Openbaring 11:17. Stond het ’Lam’ in het eerste deel centraal, nu beheerst de ’Leeuw van Juda’ het toneel, de Koning die komt, en het oordeel van God over de zondige aarde. Ook hierin wordt God geprezen en aanbeden, waarna het werk tot een climax wordt gebracht en eindigt in achtstemmige aanbidding. De compositie heeft alles in zich om in de smaak te vallen bij koren die een behoorlijke moeilijkheidsgraad niet uit de weg gaan: prachtige koordelen en boeiend solisten- en orkestwerk. De toonsoort- en tempowisselingen geven het een verrassend en spannend karakter; de dynamische opbouw leidt grote vocale hoogtepunten in. Klassieke en moderne harmonisaties, soms iets gospelachtigs, dan weer romantisch zoals Mendelssohn, maar het geheel steeds in een verrassend eigen stijl. Revelation 7:9-14 (free after) After this I looked, and saw a great crowd, a multitude, that no one could count, from every tribe, people and nation, standing before the throne in elation. Angels were standing around the throne, elders and four living creatures alone. They fell down on their faces before the throne of God and sang praises: Amen: praise and glory, wisdom and thanks, and honor, and power, and strength, praise and glory, for ever and ever, Amen. They were all clothed in white, and with a loud voice they cried: Salvation belongs to God alone, and to the Lamb on the throne, Amen. Then one of the elders spoke and asked me: These in white robes, who are they and where do they come from? These are they who have come out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb! Revelation 7:10 Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb. 7. Psalm 130:3,4 If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who would stand? But with You there is forgiveness, therefore You are feared. 8. Revelation 7:15-17 They are before the Throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple: He who sits on the Throne will spread His tent over them. Never again will they hunger, never again will they thirst, the sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the Throne will be their Shepherd. Revelation 11:15 The kingdom of this world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever. 10. Revelation 11:17-18 We give thanks to You Lord God Almighty, who is, who was: because You have taken your great power, and have begun to reign. The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, the time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets, and Your saints, and those who fear Your Name! 11. Revelation 15:3,4 Great and marvellous are Your deeds, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Your ways, King of the ages. Who will not fear You, o Lord, and bring glory to Your name? For you alone are holy: all nations will come and worship before You: for Your righteous acts have been revealed. 12. Revelation 16:5-7 You are just in your judgments, You who are and who were, the Holy One, because you have so judged. For they have shed the blood of Your saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve. Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are Your judgments. 13. Revelation 19:4,5 Amen!
